How to overcome anxiety and fear in testing times?
My dear readers. Anxiety and fear has certainly become a way of life for many of us, which many of us would certainly hate to accept. But as Oscar Wilde mentioned “Truth is rarely pure and never simple”. Indeed, the bitter truth is that anxiety and fear has gripped mankind with its dark clutches.
In simple words, we fear something or someone because of any unpleasant and scary experience we have had with that person or an object. Anxiety is a result of an unstable mind and confused mind, especially when the mind is stuck between success and failure, to try something or not to try etc, or it may also arise when we are constantly thinking about the future. So, if we really want to be successful in our lives we must let go off these energy draining emotions.
There have been people, who overcame anxiety and fear through grit and determination by following certain steps. There are people who are in the process or just started to change themselves. And others, who continue to suffer because of fear and anxiety.
Some of the steps through which we can overcome fear and anxiety are:
- Mindfulness and being in the present : If you drink water, then you should only drink water. What I mean to explain is that, when we are doing something, our full focus should be on the work or activity which we are doing. Lot of times, our mind would trick us into thinking about the outcome or would tend to divert our concentration into something unessential. We have to realize the fact that if we stick to these old patterns then life is not going to change.
- Discipline : Now, I would love to explain the merits of discipline. If we lead a disciplined lifestyle, then we would ensure that certain activities are done within a stipulated period of time as a result of which we would not have to worry whether some work is finished or not. Moreover, discipline also increases our confidence as we would be assured that we have reserved certain part of the day for that activity / work or we would have successfully done the work.
- Breathing exercise : Modern scientists are of the view that emotions like fear / anxiety can be overcome through mindful breathing. Normally, when we are anxious about something, our breathing pattern becomes irregular or fast. Now, if we focus on our breathing and slow down or regularize our breathing, it would make lots of difference, and it would have a calming effect on us. In yoga, there is a breathing technique called anulom-vilom which is basically alternate nostril breathing technique. Because of anulom-vilom people have cured themselves from anxiety, B.P., diabetes and various other lifestyle diseases.
- Books : History has witnessed that people like Swami Vivekananda, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, became influential owing to their persistence in their activity. They faced failure not once, twice or plethora of times. It was because of their will power that they were able to bring about change and they succeeded in bringing out people from suppression and illusion. One must read the autobiographies of these great personalities to understand that fear is not the solution for problems or setbacks that we face in our life. It is conquered through planning, execution and learning.
